High Risk Pregnancy

A high-risk pregnancy is a pregnancy that has increased health risk to the mother, fetus, or both during pregnancy, during delivery, or after delivery. There are certain factors that contribute to high-risk pregnancy like:- 

• age (<17 or >35yrs),
• lifestyle preferences like smoking and alcohol,
• multiple pregnancies like twins, triplets
• previous cesarean delivery
•  maternal health problems (like diabetes, hypertension, hypothyroidism, epilepsy, heart disorder, etc)
• certain conditions develop in pregnancy pose high risks like (low lying placenta, fetal growth retardation, and Rh sensitization)

A high-risk pregnancy requires special care to reduce the risk of complications, More prenatal visits, more examinations, and sometimes multiple specialties are required. However, a high-risk pregnancy does not necessarily mean that the mother or the baby will have any health problems. Many women with such pregnancies have healthy prenatal (before delivery) and postnatal periods.
