A gynaecological laparoscopy is a procedure that looks inside your lower tummy to examine your womb (uterus), fallopian tubes, and ovaries (abdomen). Laparoscopy in gynaecology can be used to diagnose and/or treat a condition. A gynaecological laparoscopy is typically performed under general anaesthesia, which means you will be asleep the entire time. Your doctor will tell you when to stop eating and drinking. You should avoid eating for at least six hours before your gynaecological laparoscopy and drink only clear fluids for up to two hours. However, follow your anaesthetist's instructions. A gynaecological laparoscopy to diagnose a condition should take between half an hour and an hour. It will take longer if your doctor needs to treat a condition. Your doctor will make one or more small cuts in your lower tummy, including one in your tummy button (navel). They will then insert a tube through one of these cuts and gently inflate your stomach to improve its visibility. A small telescope with a camera (laparoscope) will then be inserted through another cut by your doctor. The camera on the laparoscope sends images of the inside of your tummy to a monitor, which your doctor can view. Other instruments may be passed through the cuts if your doctor needs to take tissue samples or treat a condition.
